New Consignment Taking Dates!

Annie Adams

Hi to all of our lovely shoppers! If you didn't already know, sometimes our stores have to stop taking in consignment during certain periods. This isn't because we don't want your beautiful items, its merely because we don't have any room in the back or on the floor! So when we stop taking for a few weeks, we're working like madmen sorting and getting those new items out on the floor. If you're ever curious as to if we are accepting consignment or not, don't hesitate to give us a phone call!

Now what we've all been waiting for! Our new accepting dates for this month are as follows:

Elmwood : November 15th

Williamsville : November 14th

We will be accepting only winter items at this time! Thank you all for your support and understanding. See you soon!

Second Chic's Second Nature

Annie Adams

The 3 R’s are second nature to Second Chic. We love providing stylish and unique secondhand fashions while striving to ethically consume.

Enthusiasm for secondhand shopping as a viable alternative to purchasing new clothing has steadily increased, even becoming trendy over the past several years. The reasons for this are many. Our bloggers have settled on these top three considerations for embracing secondhand fashion:

  • Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Chemical processes for manufacturing clothing are shockingly harsh, emitting harmful substances into the air we breathe. Not only that, but when these clothes are disposed of into landfills they do not degrade properly because of the synthetic or non-organic materials from which they are being produced. Mass production also requires the use of many resources, a key one being water (it can take over 700 gallons of water to produce the cotton to make just one t-shirt!). Here are a couple links that further explain the negative impact fast fashion has on our environment:

  • Give Your Wallet a Break

Sure, sure, the economy is improving but it doesn’t always feel like it! Designer price tags can be hefty, or the alternative of fast fashion at lower-end retailers leaves the magic out of buying new & the garments don’t necessarily hold up. And don’t get us wrong! At the Chic we are undeniably shopping-addicts, so we understand the desire or need to shop new every once in a while. However, because our particular consignment business doesn’t discriminate against certain brands we do get those like-new garments from your favorite popular stores. Because they are secondhand we at the very least get to extend the lives of those products, as opposed to adding to the ever-growing landfills. This articles’ 9 reasons to shop secondhand describes our ideals pretty perfectly:

  • Stand Out in the Commercial Crowd

Ok, let us get off our ethically sourced high-horse for a minute and talk about looking great. Retail stores provide on-trend garments in every size and their availability is virtually limitless. Sounds great until you imagine every one you know walking into work in the same polka dot blouse and pants. A consignment shop makes it easy to add flavor to your personal style. Sought after designers and stylists have been using thrift stores for inspiration for ages so naturally celebs have followed suit, Drew Barrymore and Emma Watson being just two that support secondhand shopping and ethical fashion.

So our question is why NOT shop secondhand? While watching your footprint, you can save more than half of what you would normally spend on clothing at a retail store. And chances are you will find more than a couple unique hidden gems tucked away that you’ll be getting compliments about for years to come! Give the Chic a visit and see for yourself.

Fall 2016 Trends

Annie Adams

The September Equinox has officially passed, and here at The Chic we are all about fall!

Fall 2016 runways are full of surprising colors, thrilling statement pieces, and head-to-toe textures reminding us of peak leaves against grey skies. We hope you enjoy some of our favorite trends put together in ways we think translate well from runway to real life:

Velveteen Bunny

We say luxe velvet never really goes away, and it has been gaining popularity for the past few seasons now. If you’ve been hesitating on the velvet plunge, it’s time to jump into this soft, sophisticated answer to looking chic and keeping cozy. We paired a black velvet skirt with a floral crop (florals are another fall trend- yay!), and finished the look with a merlot blazer by Sound and Matter.

Nomad Princess

Versatility is important for a busy and eclectic nomadic princess. Transition this summer’s off the shoulder dress or body suit and show a little shoulder this fall!  Our second look shows Kait in the perfect boho cotton dress by ABS layered with a vintage paisley vest and Betsey Johnson belt. Rule the streets with this sweet but sassy ensemble.

Blair Waldorf

It’s no secret that plaid is one of the tell-tale signs that fall has arrived. This year fashion experts are saying to think outside the box. Make plaid the theme of your entire outfit or wear a plaid overcoat for a fresh take on a fall staple. Miss Molly is sporting a combination of plaids to illustrate the playfulness of the “new plaid” on the runways and another big trend: turtlenecks under dresses. Layers for days (and chilly fall nights!).

Mellow Yellow

Wearing dusty pink and pretty much any shade of yellow together this fall will make you the chicest lady in the room. These *usually* strict spring colors have made their way into your favorite fall garments, adding the perfect pop of color to your wardrobe. In this look, Alison dons a sweet pink blazer over a mustard embroidered top and plaid slacks. Extra points for coordinating her hair color.

Fuzzy Fall

Shearling bombers are circling their way back into the fashion world and in the best way possible. Steph shows how to make this military classic look fresh and feminine paired with a floral pencil skirt and fuzzy jeweled sweater – note the pink and yellow tones again here!

Goldie Hawn

In our final look we make a statement with metallic tones and ruffles. This structured vintage Hampton Nites top is giving us all the feels, especially paired with hip-hugging jeans and a choker by Brittany Rea. Take this look from day to night with ease and remember, while we are always watching what’s happening on the runways, we are ALL about curating your own personal style.

Mic drop.

How To Transition Your Summer Wardrobe to Fall

Annie Adams

Just when you’re getting used to the summer heat, fall is already knocking at your door! At The Chic, we’re all about getting the best bang for your buck and extending the life of your wardrobe. So don’t pack away all those summer clothes too soon! There are so many easy ways to transition your favorite summer pieces into the cooler months.

First and foremost – layer it up! There is no easier way to get that cozy-but-chic look by adding a classic cardigan, fun vest or scarf. We’re firm believers of more is more in this scenario. You can either create an easy-going, flowy look with looser, oversized items or add a belt to create a more structured look. And of course… Flannels. Need we say more?

Another easy way to transition any look is to add tights or leggings. Throw them on under your favorite dress or shorts, as long as the pattern isn’t strictly summer or the colors aren’t too hot! In the first look we chose to layer a Forever 21 floral sundress with a crochet crop top over tights. Add a fun bag like this metallic Fossil backpack, especially for all you back-to-schoolers. Don’t forget to stack some jewelry - this sculptural necklace by Rea Designs adds the perfect edge.

Adding a pair of closed toe shoes, riding boots or combats immediately changes the vibe of any outfit and gives you that effortless fall feel. In the second look we paired maroon Forever 21 corduroy shorts with a breezy top by Patterson J. Kincaid and added a floppy felt hat. The fringe bag by 3AM Forever and dark lip ties the look together.

Accessorizing is a no brainer – but the options for fall are limitless. Chunky scarves, big bags, the perfect pair of sunnies… The list goes on! Make any outfit pop instantly with just a couple accent pieces like in our third look. We mixed a flowy maxi skirt with an Old Navy cotton blouse and Wilson’s black leather vest. Again, we added a chunky pendant by Rea Designs and a detailed brown leather purse for some extra flair.

Whether you’re headed to date night or to the pumpkin patch, these tips can help transform your favorite summer items to create the perfect fall look. As always, these items are available in our lovely Rochester store – come say hi and check out our unique collection! See you soon.

Hi-Lo Style

Annie Adams

Here at the Chic we are lucky enough to have great clothes essentially dropped at our doorstep on the daily. We truly never know what goodies we will find! Because of this eclectic mix of clothing, we can curate many different looks.

One of our favorite styles is the “Hi-lo” look. The benefit of donning the Hi-lo is that you can transition effortlessly from day/work to evening/party. You may also find that you get more use of garments that you may typically stuff in the back of the closet until the appropriate event occurs.

Hi-lo looks can be achieved in so many different ways: by mixing what is considered to be a high-end brand/designer with a low/non brand garment, pairing formal garments with casual garments, &/or some combination of both.

A fun way to achieve a Hi-lo look is pairing a formal skirt with a casual top bearing an irreverent graphic or a chunky knit. Using an unexpected combination of fabrics will add sophistication. Great jewelry will easily tie in the look- the key is to remember scale and style. If you’ve got a delicate skirt or top, it’s ideal to go with a chunkier or bolder piece of jewelry.

We chose to pair a Jessica Mclintock for Gunne Sax pink iridescent skirt with cotton tops and bullet casing & feather dangly earrings by Inner Loop Design Co., as well as a contrasting silver necklace by Interstellar Love Craft. This combines dressy glam with an earthy & functional wearability.

In another look, we've put a Forever 21 multicolor crop top with some sheer, flowy wideleg trousers and layered an acid wash denim jacket on top. We added some more interesting necklaces by Inner Loop Design Co. to make the look pop. The material and movement of the pants combined with the casual fabric of the top makes it a great choice for strolling down Park Ave for a few cocktails with the ladies in comfort and style.

However you create your Hi-lo style, the most important piece is reflecting your own personal style, because that’s how we roll here at The Chic.
